Chat Bad GPT

At the tail-end of 2022, students, professionals and any anyone with an internet connection would not stop talking about the benefits of Chat GPT. Since then, Chat GPT has been used by people of all ages and vocations to help do their homework, write copy and even create healthy eating plans. Whatever the arguments for or against using Chat GPT might be, it is generally agreed that the chatbot has made life is easier for many people who use it. Unfortunately, AI tools like Chat GPT haven’t only made life easier for stressed out university students. They have also made life easier for scammers.

In 2023, we were introduced to Chat GPT’s evil twin, Fraud GPT. Fraud GPT is a tool sold on the dark web that works similarly to Chat GPT, but instead of helping users write essays about the Russian Revolution, it helps scammers create content to facilitate cyber-attacks. Fraud GPT uses machine learning to generate deceptive content like undetectable malware and malicious code, as well as to detect vulnerabilities in victims’ cyber security. The technology is used by scammers to create phishing campaigns and generate text messages aimed at pressuring victims to part with their hard-earned cash.

Since variety is the spice of life, scammers cannot possibly rely solely on Fraud GPT. This is why there are several tools offering the same service, such as Worm GPT and Evil GPT. Collectively; Bad GPT.

So how are the general public responding to this increased threat level? Well, badly. Those in the cyber security game report that, while there is an increased awareness about the chances of being scammed, most people believe it will not happen to them. And for those who’ve been scammed in the past, they seem to believe that the scam-lightning won’t strike twice in the same place. Where previous scam victims do take steps to reduce their vulnerabilities, often these are low-tech responses such as simply not opening or replying to unknown texts and emails. Unfortunately, this approach is less “see no evil”, and more “head in the sand”.

Scammers are operating with increased sophistication, which is only made easier by tools like Bad GPT. Ignoring the risk is not an adequate form of protection. Understanding cyber risks and knowing the status of your cyber health has never been more important. Poor cyber health is not only a financial risk. Victims of scamming can experience negative consequences to their employment and to their reputation as well. These risks are amplified when companies are targeted which can result in data breaches that harm their customers.

A robust cyber-health check can help mitigate risks, save you money and save face. Futurum Asia provides in-depth Cyber Health Checks for individuals and company employees. These checks help our clients to understand what information about them is exposed online. This exposed information is what scammers use to target and convincingly interact with victims. Knowing and patching these personal vulnerabilities are a major step towards protecting yourself from malicious actors online.
